Huskies Finish 4th in the WCHA (17-16-2, 12-10-2 WCHA)
SEASON WRAP-UP: The St. Cloud State women's ice hockey team finished the 2000-01 season with their best record since the program began in 1998. The Huskies closed the season above .500, with a 17-16-2 overall record, and 12-10-2 in the WCHA. St. Cloud State was only one of three teams to defeat every team in the league at least one time. The Huskies recorded some historical wins, beating Minnesota, MN-Duluth and Wisconsin for the first time in league history.
2000-01 WCHA TOURNAMENT RESULTS: The #4 St. Cloud State women's ice hockey team lost to #5 Ohio State, 5-0 on March 8 at the Rochester Recreation Center. St. Cloud State finished the 2000-2001 season with a 17-16-2 overall record. Ohio State will play #1 Minnesota on March 9 at the Rochester Recreation Center. OSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one stanza and broke loose in the second period scoring three goals, all on the power play. The Buckeyes outshot the Huskies 29-19. Four of Ohio State's goals were on the power play. In their last three meetings, Ohio State has shutout the Huskies 11-0. SCSU also fell to the Buckeyes in the first round of the 2000 WCHA tournament, 3-2. Wethington Co-Coach of the Year, All-WCHA Awards Announced
2000-01 ALL-WCHA, COACH OF THE YEAR: Rochester, Minn. - St. Cloud State's Kerry Brodt-Wethington was named the 2000-01 WCHA Coach of the Year. Wethington, in her third season at the helm for the St. Cloud Huskies, coached her team to a 17-15-2 overall record, and 12-10-2 in league play. Wethington was one of three coaches to defeat each team in the league at least one time. The Huskies finished fourth in the conference. Wethington shared the honor with Minnesota coach, Laura Halldorson. Four players from St. Cloud State earned All-WCHA awards, which were announced on March 7. First-year defender Kobi Kawamoto (Surrey, B.C.), junior defender Fiona McLeod (Toronto) and first-year forward Ricki-Lee Doyle (Calgary) were named to the 2000-01 All-WCHA Second Team. In 33 games played overall, Kawamoto scored 17 goals and 22 assists for 39 points. In 24 league games played, Kawamoto netted 10 goals and tallied 15 assists. McLeod, second on the team in scoring, totaled 12 goals and 35 assists. McLeod leads the league in assists scored. Doyle leads the Huskies in scoring with 26 goals and 36 assists for 62 points.
Three criteria must be met in order to earn a spot on the All-Academic Team: The student-athlete must have at least one year of eligibility at her present institution, prior to current academic year; have at least a 3.0 for the two previous semesters, and the student-athlete must have played in one-half of the games played at her institution, or 33 % of the games played for goaltenders. Sophomore goalie Laura Gieselman (Annandale, MN) was named to the 2000-01 WCHA All-America Team.

HEAD COACH: Kerry Brodt Wethington finished her third season as the head coach for the women's hockey program at St. Cloud State. She joined the staff in 1998-99, and is the first women's hockey coach in the history of the program at SCSU…Brodt Wethington is a 1995 graduate of SCSU. She is also a coach for the U.S. Community Olympic Development Program for girl's ice hockey and the founder and director of the Skater's Link Hockey Clinic. In the first two seasons of the program, Brodt-Wethington has compiled a 38-47-7 record with the Huskies.
ASSISTANT COACHING STAFF: David Prokop is the first-ever assistant coach hired for the SCSU women's hockey team. He joined the staff in1998-99, and since that time has been one of the team's top recruiters. Prokop graduated with a bachelors degree from Concordia College in Moorhead…Jean Vaillancourt joined the staff at SCSU in 1999-2000. He brings a varied hockey background to the SCSU program, having coached both men and women in Ontario. Vaillancourt earned a degree in Human Kinetics form the University of Ottawa in 1997…Jeff Rutten finished his second season as a volunteer assistant coach for St. Cloud State…Rutten has been coach hockey for the past 10 years.
2000-01 TEAM CAPTAINS: The team captains for the 2000-01 season were junior defenders Tara McNamara and assistant captain Katy Battis.
2000-01 SCSU Player Notes:
#1 Ellen Brinkman, First-Year, Goaltender
Ellen Brinkman, a native of North St. Paul, Minnesota, started three games for the Huskies. Brinkman, a backup goalie for Laura Gieselman, made 57 saves in 182:52 minutes. Brinkman finished the season with a 2-1-0 record; .877 saves percentage and a 2.62 goals against average.
Key Performance: Brinkman stopped all of Sacred Heart's 11 shots on goal on Nov. 22 to earn her first career shutout at SCSU in a 5-0 victory.
#2 Leanne Perrin, First-Year, Defense
Leanne Perrin, a native of Maple Ridge, British Columbia, played in all but two of St. Cloud State's 35 games. Perrin, an impact player on defense, netted two goals and 10 assists in 32 games.
Key Performance: In her fourth game as a Husky, Perrin scored two goals against MSU-Mankato at the National Hockey Center on Oct. 21. The Huskies defeated the Mavericks, 6-1.
#4 Roxanne Stang, First-Year, Forward
Roxy Stang, a native of Princeton, Minnesota, was a critical factor in St. Cloud State's success this season. Stang set a record with three hat tricks in 28 games played. An impressive scorer, Stang scored 26 goals and 13 assists for SCSU. Stang tallied at least one point in 20 of 28 games in the ice.
Key Performance: St. Cloud State defeated the Bulldogs of MN-Duluth on Feb. 17, 6-5 in overtime thanks in large part to Stang's performance. Roxy scored four goals and one assist to lift SCSU to their 15th win of the season.
#5 Alison Ribar, First-Year, Forward
Alison Ribar, a native of Eagan, Minnesota, played in 33 of the Huskies 35 games. Ribar netted one goal and two assists for Coach Wethington.
Key Performance: Ribar scored all her points in a 5-0 victory over Sacred Heart University on Nov. 22.
#6 Abby Cooper, Sophomore, Forward
Abby Cooper, a native of Washington, Michigan, finished her second season with the Huskies with 10 goals and 15 assists. Cooper played in all 35 games for SCSU. Impressively, five of her 10 goals were on the power play. In two seasons with the Huskies, Cooper has totaled 19 goals and 21 assists in 70 games.
Key Performance: Cooper had a season high three points in the Huskies last regular season game against MSU-Mankato on March 3. Her goal and two assists helped the Huskies beat the Mavericks, 5-2.
#7 Ricki-Lee Doyle, First-Year, Forward
Ricki-Lee Doyle, a native of Calgary, Alberta, finished an excellent rookie season at SCSU. Doyle led the team in goals scored and assists. In 34 games , Doyle netted 26 goals and 36 assists for 62 points. Doyle scored 12 power play goals, one short-handed goal, five game winning goals and one game-tying goal.
Key Performance: Doyle scored her first career hat trick as a Husky on Jan. 8 against Bemidji State. SCSU won, 5-4.
#8 Jennifer Swanson, Sophomore, Forward
Jennifer Swanson, a native of Rosemount, Minnesota, was a critical player in several of the Huskies big victories. Swanson scored two goals and two assists with wins against Ohio State, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and MN-Duluth. Swanson ended her second season with three goals and seven assists in 32 games played. In two seasons at St. Cloud State, Swanson has tallied 14 goals and 25 assists in 67 games of action.
Key Performance: Swanson scored the game-winning goal at 11:37 in the third period against MSU-Mankato on March 2.
#9 Gabrielle Adams, First-Year, Defense
Brie Adams, a native of Allen Park, Michigan, netted one goal and three assists as a defender. Adams played in all 35 games for Coach Wethington.
Key Performance: Adams scored the sixth goal for SCSU in a 6-1 victory over Wayne State on Nov. 4. Adams also assisted on the game-winning goal.
#10 Amanda Presenger, Junior, Forward
Amanda Presenger, a native of Thunder Bay, Ontario, played in all but two games for the Huskies. Presenger has scored eight goals and 10 assists in two seasons with the Huskies.
#12 Briana Munyon, Junior, Forward
Briana Munyon, a native of North St. Paul, Minnesota, was one of five players to play in all 35 games. Munyon improved from last year's performance, tallying three goals and five assists.
Key Performance: Munyon scored the game-winning goal at 3:42 in the first period on Oct. 21 as the Huskies skated past the Mavericks, 6-1.
#13 Katy Battis, Junior, Defense, Co-Captain
Katy Battis, a native of West St. Paul, Minnesota, sat out 14 games in the early part of the season due to a knee injury. Battis returned on Jan. 5 against Niagara University and finished the season with three assists. In two seasons with the program, Battis has scored one goal and seven assists. Battis remained the team's assistant captain for the second year in a row.
Key Performance: Battis assisted on Rachel Denner's short-handed goal at 13:34 in the third period on Oct. 20 against MSU-Mankato. SCSU won, 5-1.
#14 Kirsten Olson, Sophomore, Forward
Kirsten Olson, a native of Fairmont, Minnesota, tallied one goal for the Huskies. Olson transferred to Gustavus Adolphus during Christmas break. She finished her career at SCSU with six goals and four assists.
Key Performance: Olson netted her solo goal at 17:35 in the second period on Nov. 22 against Sacred Heart University.
#15 Kobi Kawamoto, First-Year, Defense
Kobi Kawamoto, a native of Surrey, British Columbia, had a fascinating first year at St. Cloud State. Kawamoto was fourth on the team in scoring with 17 goals and 22 assists for 39 points. In 34 games, Kawamoto was second on the team in assists. Kobi netted an incredible five game-winning goals.
Key Performance: Scored the game-winning goals at 3:42 in the second stanza against Wisconsin on Jan. 12. Also tallied two assists in the game.
#17 Fiona McLeod, Junior, Defense/Forward
Fiona McLeod, a native of Toronto, Ontario, was second on the team in scoring with 12 goals and 35 assists. McLeod scored three or more points in nine games. She sat out final game of the season on March 8 due to injury. Fiona has played in 69 games for SCSU, tallying 30 and 47 assists.
Key Performance: Scored two goals and one assist against Minnesota on Feb. 10 as the Huskies beat the Gophers for the first time ever.
#19 Bridget Davenport, Sophomore, Forward
A native of Madison, Wisconsin, Davenport played in all 35 games for SCSU. Davenport netted two goals and three assist for Coach Wethington.
Key Performance: Scored first goal of the game against BSU on Jan. 19 in an 8-6 win.
#20 Jenny Jones, Junior, Forward
A native of Owatonna, Minnesota, Jones played in 24 games for the Huskies before leaving the team. As a Husky, Jones netted five goals and three assists.
Key Performance: Netted one goal and one assist against Sacred Heart on Nov. 22.
#21 Amanda Mathison, Sophomore, Defense
A native of Newport, Minnesota, Mathison continued to contribute to the programs success with her performance on the ice. Mathison, who sat out seven games due to a head injury, chipped in seven goals and three assists. Two seasons in a Huskies uniform, Amanda has scored 11 goals and six assists in 61 games.
Key Performance: Scored two goals against MSU-Mankato to lift the Huskies to a 5-2 win on March 3.
#22 Erin McNamara, Sophomore, Forward
A native of Macomb, Michigan, McNamara aided the Huskies to a 17-15-2 record. In 33 games played, Erin scored three goals and six assists. A second year player for Coach Wethington, McNamara has tallied 10 goals and 16 assists through 68 games.
Key Performance: Scored a goal and assist in an 8-6 victory over Bemidji State on Jan. 19 at Bemidji.
#27 Tara McNamara, Junior, Defense, Captain
A native of Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota, McNamara is one of two players on the team from the original 1998-99 squad. An aggressive defender, Tara captained the 2000-01 team and netted one goal and one assist.
Key Performance: Scored the Huskies third goal of the game as SCSU breezed past Wayne State 3-1 on Nov. 4.
#29 Rachel Denner, Junior, Forward
A native of North Lancaster, Ontario, Denner scored 11 goals and 13 assists through 16 games before leaving the team. Denner ended her career with the Huskies with 20 goals and 17 assists.
#33 Laura Gieselman, Sophomore, Goaltender
A native of Annandale, Minnesota, Gieselman saw action at the net in 33 games for the Huskies. Gieselman had an incredible 1,013 saves. Laura finished the season with a 15-15-2 record, 3.88 goals against average and .890 saves percentage. Earned her second career shutout on Jan. 13 against Wisconsin, 3-0.
Key Performance: Stopped 61 of MN-Duluth's 66 shots on goal on Feb. 17 to give St. Cloud State a 6-5 victory over the Bulldogs.
#35 Sondra Diaz-Arntzen, Senior, Goaltender
A native of Waukesha, Wisconsin, Diaz-Arntzen was one of two players remaining from the inaugural season and was the lone senior for the Huskies. Sondra finished her career at SCSU with a 12-15-2 record and 644 saves.
2000-01 Team Notes
* St. Cloud State ended their 2000-01 season on March 8 with a loss to Ohio State in the 2001 WCHA Conference Tournament at the Rochester Recreation Center.
* Head Coach Kerry Brodt-Wethington was named the 2000-01 WCHA Co-Coach of the Year. Wethington shared the honors with Minnesota's Laura Halldorson.
* Three Huskies were named to the All-WCHA Second Team - First-year defender Kobi Kawamoto (Surrey, B.C.), first-year forward Ricki-Lee Doyle (Calgary), and junior defender/forward Fiona McLeod (Toronto). Sophomore goalie Laura Gieselman earned a spot on the All-Academic Team.
* St. Cloud State posted their best record since the program began in 1998-99. SCSU was one point ahead of Ohio State to finish fourth in the WCHA. The Huskies were 17-16-2 overall, 12-10-2 in the WCHA.
* The St. Cloud State women's hockey team set a new record for wins in a season after emerging victorious in 17 regular season games. The old record of 13 was set in 1999-2000.
* First-year forward Ricki-Lee Doyle led the Huskies in scoring with 26 goals, 36 assists for 62 points. Doyle scored 12 power play goals, five game-winning goals, one short-handed goal and one game-tying goal.
* Senior goaltender Sondra Diaz-Arntzen was one of two players remaining from the inaugural season. Junior defender Tara McNamara is the only player to have played in all 92 games for the Huskies since the program started in 1998.
* SCSU posted a 10-10-0 record at home, a 7-5-2 record on the road and a 0-1-0 at a neutral site. The Huskies were 5th in the WCHA on the power play with 25.0 %.
* St. Cloud State broke several records this season, including most goals scored (131; previous record was 83), most shots on goal (981; previous record was 928) and most power play goals scored (42; previous record was 19).
