SCSU DEFEAT THE #2 RANKED TEAM IN THE NATION – The St. Cloud State women’s hockey team (14-12-2, 9-7-2 WCHA) made history Saturday night as they defeated the Minnesota Gophers, 7-6, at the National Hockey Center. It was their first win against UM since the program began. First-year forward Roxanne Stang (Princeton) led the Huskies with her second hat trick of the season. Junior forward Erin McNamara (MaComb, MI) scored the first goal of the game for the Huskies. Stang and Ricki-Lee Doyle (Calgary) scored the next three goals for SCSU to give the Huskies a 4-2 lead after one period. Junior forward/defender Fiona McLeod (Toronto) ignited in the second period, scoring back to back goals. The Gophers were on a power play when McLeod intercepted a pass and scored the Huskies fifth goal of the game. Two minutes later McLeod netted her 11th goal of the season, giving the Huskies a 6-2 lead. Stang scored SCSU’s last goal of the game and the game-winning goal at the 10:03 mark in the second period. The Gophers (20-5-1, 15-2-1) attempted a comeback, scoring the last four goals of the game and pulling their goalie with 1:02 left in the game. Courtney Kennedy led the Gophers with two goals and two assists. Game one of the WCHA series was played at Mariucci Arena on Friday night. The Gophers Nadine Muzerall led her team to a 7-1 victory with her third hat trick of the season. Muzerall tallied the first two goals of the game, both in the first period. Minnesota grabbed a 4-0 lead after two periods before Kobi Kawamoto (Surrey, B.C.) put the Huskies on the scoreboard on an unassisted goal at 1:36 in the third. Minnesota out-shot SCSU 107-33 on the weekend. Sophomore goaltender Laura Gieselman (Annandale) kept the Huskies alive in both games with 94 saves. St. Cloud will face off against MN-Duluth this weekend at the National Hockey Center.

HEAD COACH: Kerry Brodt Wethington is in her third season as the head coach for the women's hockey program at St. Cloud State. She joined the staff in 1998-99, and is the first women's hockey coach in the history of the program at SCSU…Brodt Wethington is a 1995 graduate of SCSU. She is also a coach for the U.S. Community Olympic Development Program for girls ice hockey and the founder and director of the Skater's Link Hockey Clinic.

ASSISTANT COACHING STAFF: David Prokop is the first-ever assistant coach hired for the SCSU women's hockey team. He joined the staff in1998-99, and since that time has been one of the team's top recruiters. Prokop graduated with a bachelors degree from Concordia College in Moorhead…Jean Vaillancourt joined the staff at SCSU in 1999-2000. He brings a varied hockey background to the SCSU program, having coached both men and women in Ontario. Vaillancourt earned a degree in Human Kinetics form the University of Ottawa in 1997.

THE OPPONENTS: SCSU will face off against the defending WCHA conference champions in the second series this season. The Huskies and Bulldogs last met on November 17-18 at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center. Duluth defeated the Huskies in the first game, 7-3, but the two tied the following night in overtime, 3-3. MN-Duluth is led by sophomore forwards Maria Rooth (28-25=53) and Hanne Sikio (26-25=51). Guarding the net for the Bulldogs is sophomore goalie Tuula Puputti. Shannon Miller, the 1999-00 WCHACoach of the Year, is in her second season at the helm for MN-Duluth. She led the Bulldogs to a 25-5-2 finish last year. The Bulldogs lead the series, 7-0-1.

TIME AND DATE CHANGE ANNOUNCED: St. Cloud State’s meeting with Ohio State on Feb. 23-24 at the National Hockey Center has been changed. The two teams will play the WCHA series on Sat., Feb. 24th and Sun., Feb. 25 at the NHC. Both games begin at 11:05 a.m.

2000-01 TEAM CAPTAINS: The team captains for the 2000-01 season are junior defenders Tara McNamara and assistant captain Katy Battis.

LIVE FROM KVSC: KVSC 88.1 FM will broadcast two remaining games this season for the Huskies. KVSC will be at the Huskies February 16th game at 7:05 p.m., and February 17th at 3:05 p.m. against MN-Duluth at the National Hockey Center. If you can’t make it to the game, be sure to tune in!

SCSU CONFERENCE RANKINGS: Doyle and McLeod continue to lead the Huskies in almost every scoring category in the conference. In 18 league games played, Doyle is fifth in the WCHA in points scored (17-17=34) and McLeod is sixth (7-25=32). Doyle is fifth in goals scored (17), and right behind her is Stang with 16 goals in 15 conference games played. McLeod leads the conference in assists (25); not far behind is Doyle in eighth place with 17 assists. Doyle and McLeod are ranked third and seventh in power play points scored, (9-6=15, 1-11=12) respectively. Leading the defense in scoring is McLeod (5-24=29), and Kawamoto (8-11=19) is currently in fifth. Goalie Laura Gieselman is third in the conference in saves percentage (.891)

HUSKY INFO: Junior defender and assistant captain Katy Battis (W. St. Paul) returned to action January 5 against Niagara after missing 14 games with a grade 2 MCL strain which she suffered Oct. 20 against MSU-Mankato…Amanda Mathison also returned to the Huskies line-up after being sidelined since Nov. 10 with a head injury…Sophomore forward Kirsten Olson has transferred to Gustavus Adulphus for the spring semester…The Huskies earned their first wins of the 2000-2001 season with double wins on Oct. 20-21 against MSU-Mankato, 5-1 and 6-1…two current SCSU players have played all three season of Husky hockey – Tara McNamara and Sondra Diaz-Arntzen.
