AMHERST W-HOCKEY DEFEATS U-CONN, 10-0
AMHERST, MA - Amherst College senior co-captain Gretchen Bowe (Hampstead, NH)
celebrated the final home game of her illustrious four-year career with a
dominating three-goal, two-assist performance as the host Jeffs defeated the
University of Connecticut 10-0 in a non-league women's ice hockey matchup on
Sunday.
Sophomore sensation Danielle Williams (Needham, MA) took advantage of both of
Bowe's assists and another from first-year forward Katie Potter (Ridgewood, NJ)
to notch her second hat trick of the season-increasing her team-leading point
total to 37.
But it was clearly Bowe's day as signs posted around the arena and even on the
Orr Rink Zamboni a sign read "We love you Gretchen," and "We'll
miss you #3." Bowe is the lone senior on an Amherst squad that includes
seven first-years and two sophomores. She is also the Jeffs' second
all-time leading scorer
with 76 goals and 83 assists in four seasons as a starter and is Amherst's third
leading scorer this season despite missing six games with knee and wrist
injuries.
"It was a nice way to end her home career at Amherst," said Head Coach
Kay Cowperthwait. "She's meant so much to this team and it's hard to
imagine our program without her. The fact that she ended up with five
points in her final home game is symbolic of what a great player she's
been."
With three road games remaining, the College's all-time scoring record could
still be within reach. Former Amherst great Genny Furst '00 holds the
current record with 73 goals and 90 assists, placing her just four points ahead
of Bowe, who increased her career-total to 159 with five points against U-Conn.
The Huskies never had a chance on Sunday as Amherst jumped out to a 4-0 lead in
the first period on two goals by Williams and one each from Bowe and first-year
forward Tory Serues (Cambridge, MA).
Bowe connected again just 27 seconds into the second period, igniting a six-goal
barrage that would put the Jeffs ahead 10-0 by the second intermission.
First-year forwards Katie Potter (Ridgewood, NJ), Elissa
Landes (Potomac, MD) and junior co-captain Hilary Zwerdling (Shrewsbury, MA)
also cracked the scoring column for Amherst, who improved to 7-13-1 with the
lopsided victory.
Sophomore Amherst goaltender Heidi Alexander (Edina, MN) posted 10 saves and
went largely untested en route to her fourth shutout of the season. U-Conn
goalie Diana Cohen (South Salem, NY) finished with 28 saves, as the Huskies fell
to 3-9 with the loss.
The Jeffs will finish their season with a trio of road games at Williams College
on Wednesday, Colby College on Saturday and Bowdoin College next Sunday.
