AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College women's ice hockey team watched a 2-0
first period lead turn into a 7-3 defeat at the hands of the visiting
Connecticut College Camels on Saturday, as junior Camel forward Duffy
Markham (Wellesley, MA) notched her first hat trick of the season in an ECAC
matchup at Orr Rink.
The Jeffs - looking for their fourth win in their last five games after
shutting out Wesleyan University 2-0 on Friday night - got off to a quick
start with a pair of scores in a frenetic first period.
Senior Co-captain Gretchen Bowe (Hampstead, NH), playing in her second game
since returning from a five-game layoff due to a broken wrist, rebounded her
own missed shot to give the Jeffs a 1-0 lead 2:40 into the game.
Later in the opening period, first-year Amherst forward Alison White
(Brookline, MA) emerged from a scrum in the corner and skated untouched into
the crease for a point-blank left-handed wrister to give the Jeffs the early
two-goal advantage.
>From there it was all Connecticut College, however, as the Camels erupted
for six unanswered goals (and seven overall) spanning each of the game's
remaining three periods. Rookie forward Janet Hanson (Ipswitch, MA) ignited
the onslaught with a controversial scoring strike that Amherst goaltender
Heidi Alexander (Edina, MN) appeared to have smothered on the ice with her
glovehand. Instead, the puck trickled between the sophomore netminder's
shin pads for the Camels' first goal of the game with 4:01 remaining in the
first period.
Connecticut struck again just 11 seconds later when Markham stuffed a wrist
shot into the back of the net off the ensuing faceoff to knot the score at
2-2. Another faceoff brought another Camel goal at 18:31 as sophomore
forward Lindsay Sundberg (Roswell, GA) emerged with the puck and rocketed a
slapshot past Alexander into the top right corner for a 3-2 Connecticut lead
at the first intermission.
The Camels connected twice more in each of the second and third periods,
including a pair of scoring strikes by Markham, another by Sundberg and a
second period goal from senior forward Annie Peller (Northfield, MA).
Connecticut also caught a break when White, Amherst's second leading scorer,
was lost for the game with what appeared to be a knee injury suffered on a
cross-checking penalty called against Connecticut junior defender Jessica
Haney (Jackson, WY).
Down but not out, Amherst sophomore forward Danielle Williams (Needham, MA)
found the back of the net midway through the third period with her
team-leading 19th goal of the season on a one-timer from first-year defender
Amanda Muller (Princeton, NJ). It was too little too late, however, as
Connecticut was able to play keepaway in the waning minutes and skate off
with its eighth win of the season against nine defeats.
Despite the lopsided score, Alexander had another strong game in goal for
Amherst with 26 saves, including 13 in the first period, as the Camels
outshot the Jeffs 33-22 overall. Alexander also posted 37 saves in the
Jeffs' 2-0 shutout win over Wesleyan on Friday night. Amherst, now 6-12 on
the season, returns to action Wednesday night at Trinity College at 7:30.
